Study Note

'And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do judgment' — the public recognition of Solomon's wisdom in the disputed-child case (verses 16–27) presents judicial insight not as a natural human gift but as divinely imparted (wisdom 'of God'). The verb 'feared' (yir'ah) here carries the same semantic range as 'fear of God' — reverence for the God whose wisdom operates through the king, not merely respect for royal power. The scene establishes Solomon as the paradigm of biblical wisdom-kingship, and the subsequent chapters describing his administration, temple-building, and international reputation represent the fullest realization of this divinely-given judicial gift.
