Study Note

Asa's imprisonment of the seer Hanani for delivering an unwelcome oracle — that relying on Aram rather than God had cost him victory — is the Chronicler's pivotal turning-point in an otherwise positive reign. The specific sin is not military but theological: 'Because thou hast relied on the king of Syria, and not relied on the Lord thy God' (verse 7). The deterioration from Asa's earlier prayer-dependence (2 Chronicles 14:11) to royal violence against a prophet models the Chronicler's consistent retribution theology and warns against the pride that comes with prolonged success. Asa's subsequent foot disease (verse 12) and refusal to seek God are presented as consequences of the hardened heart that persecuting a prophet reveals.
