Study Note

The nocturnal vision to Paul in Corinth — 'Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace: for I am with thee' — echoes the commissioning language of the Hebrew prophets (Jeremiah 1:8; Isaiah 41:10) and encourages continued mission in the face of Jewish opposition. The divine promise 'I have much people in this city' introduces the Pauline understanding of election as the theological basis for missionary confidence: God's predetermined purpose guarantees that proclamation will not be ultimately fruitless in any city. The Corinthian mission that follows — eighteen months of teaching — establishes the church that will receive Paul's most elaborate letters and shapes much of New Testament ethical and ecclesiological theology.
