Study Note
The risen Christ's question to Saul — 'why persecutest thou me?' — reveals the identification between Christ and his church: persecution of believers is experienced by Christ himself as persecution of his own person. This 'mystical body' theology (articulated fully in 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 and Colossians 1:18) is here at its most direct: the heavenly Lord speaks as the one injured by what was done to his followers. The Damascus road encounter is recounted three times in Acts (chapters 9, 22, 26), underscoring its foundational importance for Luke's theology of Gentile mission. Paul's own reflection on this event in Galatians 1:15-16 and 1 Corinthians 15:8-9 treats it as the defining moment of his apostolic calling.
