Study Note

Moses warns that prosperity in the land must not lead to a proud heart that forgets the Lord — the very God who brought Israel out of slavery, through the wilderness, and into abundance. The psychological profile Moses describes — memory loss through success — is one of the Hebrew Bible's most penetrating diagnoses of the spiritual dangers of wealth. The detailed reminder of wilderness provisions (water from rock, manna) in the following verses functions as an antidote: gratitude for specific remembered mercies counteracts the amnesia of prosperity. Jesus' own wilderness temptations (Matthew 4) deliberately invoke Deuteronomy 8, showing him as the true Israel who remembers and obeys where Israel forgot and failed.
