Study Note
'Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for the Lord hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted' — the cosmic praise-response to Zion's comfort anticipates Revelation 12:12's heavenly rejoicing and grounds personal consolation in universal cosmic significance: when God comforts his people, all creation has reason to sing. The verse answers Zion's complaint of verse 14 ('the Lord hath forsaken me, my Lord hath forgotten me') before that complaint is even voiced in the text's sequence, suggesting that the cosmic rejoicing of verse 13 is itself the first refutation of the despair that follows, structured so that hope precedes and reframes lament.
