Study Note
The double imperative 'draw near to God, and he will draw near to you; cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded' combines the language of covenant access with Levitical purification. The 'double-minded' (dipsychoi — literally 'two-souled') is a term James introduced in 1:8 and uses here to describe the person divided between worldly values and God — the source of the quarrels and conflicts of 4:1-3. The sequence — external (hands) and internal (hearts) — reflects the prophetic call of Isaiah 1:16 and Psalm 24:4 ('clean hands and a pure heart'), applying both dimensions of purity to the worshiping community. The mutuality ('draw near to God and he will draw near to you') affirms that human initiative in seeking God is met by divine response, without compromising divine sovereignty.
