Study Note

'I will make with them an everlasting covenant, that I will not turn away from doing good to them. And I will put the fear of me in their hearts, that they may not turn from me' — the new covenant's most distinctive feature in Jeremiah's field-purchase chapter (32:36–44) is the internalization of divine orientation: God will place the reverential awareness of himself within the covenant partner. The 'fear of the LORD' placed in the heart contrasts with the external fear produced by covenant curses (Deuteronomy 28), describing a transformation of motivation from dread to devotion. The divine promise 'I will not turn away from doing good to them' (lo-asur meithem leheitiv otam) presents the new covenant as asymmetrically guaranteed: God commits himself unconditionally while also enabling the human partner to remain faithful. This anticipates the theological structure of the new covenant in Hebrews 8–10, where Christ guarantees both sides of the covenant.
