Study Note

God calls Israel to a transformed covenant loyalty: if they swear 'the Lord lives' in truth, justice, and righteousness, then the nations will bless themselves in him and glory in him. This invokes the Abrahamic promise (Genesis 22:18) that all nations would be blessed through Abraham's seed — suggesting that Israel's covenant obedience has universal consequences. The three qualities of authentic oath-taking (truth, justice, righteousness) form a covenantal triad that Paul implicitly develops in Romans 4:3-12 when he argues that Abraham's faith righteousness was meant for all nations. Jeremiah's vision of Israel as a vehicle of blessing to the nations is a key thread in the Old Testament's missional theology.
