Study Note
The image of the householder rising and shutting the door — while those outside cry 'Lord, Lord, open unto us' and hear 'I know you not whence ye are' — presents eschatological exclusion as the consequence of timing: the door closes at a definitive moment. The vocabulary 'I know you not' (ouk oida humas) echoes Matthew 25:12 (the excluded virgins) and 7:23, forming a cluster of kingdom-sayings about exclusion despite surface familiarity with Jesus. The surprise of the excluded — 'we have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets' (13:26) — underscores that propinquity to Jesus without genuine allegiance is eschatologically fatal. The passage grounds the urgency of Luke 13:24's 'strive' with the consequence of delay: the door is open now, but will not remain so indefinitely.
