'Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord' — the promise of Elijah's return before the Day of the Lord creates the interpretive frame within which the New Testament presents John the Baptist: Matthew 11:14 and 17:12 identify John as the Elijah 'who was to come,' and Luke 1:17 describes John as going 'in the spirit and power of Elijah.' The rabbinic tradition of pouring Elijah's cup at Passover and the continued Jewish expectation of literal Elijah's return show how the verse generated multiple interpretive trajectories.
