Ashbel

Exodus & Wilderness Tribe of Benjamin · H0788
Old Testament

Ashbel was a son of Benjamin and the founder of the Ashbelite clan (Gen.46.21; Num.26.38; 1Ch.8.1).

Ashbel was the second or third son of Benjamin (Genesis 46:21; Numbers 26:38; 1 Chronicles 8:1), and the ancestor of the Ashbelite clan, one of the five Benjaminite family groups counted in Moses' second census. He was among the seventy descendants of Jacob who entered Egypt during the famine. As a founding son of Benjamin, Ashbel represents one of the original family lines of the tribe from which Israel's first king, Saul, later descended. The variations in the Benjaminite genealogical lists across Genesis, Numbers, and Chronicles reflect the complexity of tribal genealogical tradition in the Old Testament.
