Azaniah

Old Testament

Azaniah was one of the Levites who sealed the covenant during the time of Nehemiah (Neh.10.9).

Azaniah was a Levite and the father of Jeshua (or Joshua), who was one of the Levitical signatories of the covenant of faithfulness recorded in Nehemiah 10:9. The covenant, solemnly sealed by the leaders of the restored community, committed Israel to specific obligations of Torah obedience: separation from foreign marriages, Sabbath observance, the sabbatical year, and regular temple contributions. Azaniah himself may have been deceased by the time of the covenant signing, as he is known only as his son's father; or he may have been among the Levitical elders who endorsed the covenant.
