Ishmael

Divided Kingdom Tribe of Benjamin · H3458I
Old Testament

Ishmael was a descendant of Benjamin through King Saul's line.

Ishmael was the firstborn son of Abraham, born to Hagar the Egyptian maidservant of Sarah (Genesis 16). When Sarah remained barren, she offered Hagar to Abraham as a surrogate; the resulting tension led to Hagar's temporary flight to the wilderness, where an angel promised her that Ishmael would become 'a great nation' (Genesis 16:10–12). After Isaac's birth, Sarah demanded the expulsion of Hagar and Ishmael, but God affirmed that Ishmael too would father a great nation (Genesis 21:8–21). He fathered twelve princes (Genesis 25:12–18) and is regarded in Islamic tradition as a prophet and co-builder of the Kaaba with Abraham, making him a figure of immense importance across the Abrahamic faiths.
