Old Testament

Manoah, Samson's father from the tribe of Dan, was visited by the Angel of the Lord who announced Samson's birth.

Manoah was a Danite from Zorah, the father of Samson, whose wife was barren until the angel of the LORD appeared to her and announced Samson's miraculous birth (Judges 13). Manoah prayed for the angel to return and teach them how to raise the promised child, and the angel appeared again with instructions about the Nazirite vow Samson would take from birth (Judges 13:8–14). When Manoah offered a young goat and asked the angel's name, the angel replied it was 'wonderful' (or 'too wonderful') and ascended in the flame of the altar—after which Manoah feared they would die having seen God, but his wife reassured him (Judges 13:17–23). The angelic annunciation parallels similar birth narratives for Isaac and Samuel, emphasizing Samson's special consecration.
