Reuben

Patriarchs (Abraham–Joseph) Tribe of Reuben · H7205
Old Testament

Reuben was the firstborn son of Jacob and Leah, and his descendants formed one of the twelve tribes of Israel.

Reuben was the firstborn son of Jacob and Leah, the founding ancestor of one of the twelve tribes of Israel (Genesis 29:32; 35:23). Though he acted to save Joseph from death when his brothers sought to kill him (Genesis 37:21–22), he forfeited his birthright primacy through the transgression of sleeping with Bilhah, his father's concubine (Genesis 35:22; 49:3–4). Jacob's deathbed blessing transferred the rights of the firstborn to Judah and Joseph, and the tribe of Reuben settled east of the Jordan River.
