Study Note

'The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool' — this is the most frequently quoted Old Testament verse in the New Testament, cited or alluded to over thirty times. Jesus invokes it in Matthew 22:44 to demonstrate that the Messiah is David's Lord, not merely his son; Peter uses it in Acts 2:34-35 to argue that Jesus's resurrection fulfilled the enthronement; Hebrews 1:13 applies it to Christ's superiority over angels; and Hebrews 10:12-13 cites it as evidence that Christ's single offering is sufficient — he now reigns until all enemies are placed under his feet.
