Study Note
The expulsion of 'that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world' from heaven to earth is the cosmological climax of Revelation 12 and the interpretive key to the book's narrative of cosmic conflict. Connecting 'the old serpent' to Genesis 3's tempter, the verse traces the arc of evil from the Garden to the final reckoning. Jesus's statement in Luke 10:18 ('I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven') and John 12:31 ('now the prince of this world be cast out') point to the cross as the decisive defeat, of which Revelation 12 gives the apocalyptic dramatization.
