Study Note
'Nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord' — the conclusion of the doxological peroration (Romans 8:31–39) enumerates cosmic extremes — death, life, angels, rulers, present, future, powers, height, depth — as powers incapable of severing the believer from divine love. The cosmological vocabulary — hypsōma (height, possibly the zenith in astrological reckoning) and bathos (depth, the nadir) — exhausts the spatial dimensions of the ancient cosmos, suggesting that the love of God in Christ is the single constant in a universe of variable and hostile forces. The phrase 'in Christ Jesus our Lord' is the instrumental or locative of union: the love is not a quality existing apart from the person of Christ but is mediated through and identical with the covenant relationship established by the Son's death and resurrection. The verse is among the most quoted in Christian pastoral literature for its absolute assurance in the face of every form of suffering.
