Study Note

'For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens.' The five qualifications — holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, exalted above the heavens — define what the high priesthood of Christ is by describing what he uniquely is. The Levitical high priest required daily offerings for his own sins before those of the people (verse 27); Christ, having no sin to atone for, offered himself once for all. The verse is the christological climax of Hebrews 7 and grounds the sufficiency and finality of Christ's atonement in his sinless nature, a theme running through all of Hebrews' comparison of covenants.
