1 John 3:2
Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

Study Note
The dialectic of realized and future eschatology in 1 John reaches a sustained expression: 'Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.' The present tense 'we are' (esmen) is insisted upon even as the future transformation is acknowledged as not yet appearing, resisting both an over-realized eschatology (we already are what we will be) and a deferring one (we are not yet children). The logic of transformation through vision — 'we shall be like him, because we shall see him' — draws on the ancient conviction that the soul is shaped by its object of contemplation (Numbers 12:8; Psalm 17:15; 2 Corinthians 3:18). Romans 8:29 and Philippians 3:21 develop the same conformity-to-Christ eschatology in different vocabulary.
