Study Note
The exhortation to 'give diligence to make your calling and election sure' has generated substantial theological controversy about whether election can be made more or less 'sure' by human effort. Most interpreters read the 'sureness' as experiential and communal confirmation rather than ontological securing — the believer who adds the virtues of verses 5-7 (faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, charity) thereby provides visible evidence of genuine calling. The promise 'if ye do these things, ye shall never fall' (verse 10b) is read within Reformed theology as describing the preserved elect and within Arminian theology as a conditional promise that requires ongoing cooperation. The 'abundant entrance into the everlasting kingdom' (verse 11) as the telos of diligent virtue reflects the Jewish concept of entering the world-to-come with honour rather than barely surviving.
