Study Note

The list of prophets and teachers at Antioch — Barnabas, Simeon Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (foster-brother of Herod Antipas), and Saul — is one of the most ethnically and socially diverse leadership profiles in the New Testament. Antioch on the Orontes was the third city of the Roman Empire, and the church there became the base for Paul's three missionary journeys, making this verse the founding scene of organized Christian world mission. The Spirit's intervention (verse 2) during worship and fasting to commission Barnabas and Saul establishes the pneumatological character of missionary calling: it is discerned communally in prayer rather than individually engineered through ambition.
