Study Note
The description of Jesus in the days of his flesh offering 'prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence' is often taken as a description of the Gethsemane prayer of the Synoptic Gospels. The paradox — Jesus prayed to be saved from death but then went on to die — is resolved by the phrase 'he was heard.' If Gethsemane is in view, the prayer ('not as I will, but as you will') was answered not by deliverance from death but by resurrection through it. The verse is crucial for understanding the Incarnation's depth: the Son of God genuinely wrestled in prayer, demonstrating real human anguish, and thereby became capable of fully representing humanity before God (verse 8-9).
