Study Note

'Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?' The question challenges wealthy members of the assembly who were showing favoritism to the rich while dishonoring the poor. The theological basis — God has chosen (exelexato) the poor — draws on the election language of Deuteronomy and 1 Corinthians 1:26-29, where God 'chooses the foolish things of the world to confound the wise.' Luke 6:20's beatitude ('blessed are ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God') is the Gospel counterpart, suggesting that reversals of social status are intrinsic to the kingdom's coming.
