Study Note

James's challenge 'Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom' applies the test of behavioural demonstration to claims of wisdom — wisdom is not attested by eloquence but by conduct. The phrase 'meekness of wisdom' (praütēti sophias) creates an important paradox: genuine wisdom expresses itself not in intellectual domination but in gentleness, connecting intellectual virtue to the social virtue of Jesus's beatitude ('blessed are the meek'). The following verses contrast earthly wisdom (bitter envy, strife) with heavenly wisdom (pure, peaceable, gentle, easy to be intreated, full of mercy) in terms that echo Matthew 5's beatitudes and anticipate the fruits-of-the-Spirit taxonomy. Proverbs 1:7's 'the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom' and 1 Corinthians 1:24's 'Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God' provide the canonical coordinates within which James's practical wisdom-ethics finds its theological grounding.
