Study Note

'Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you' — the command draws on the Lukan reversal principle (Luke 14:11; 18:14) and Proverbs 3:34 (quoted in James 4:6: 'God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble') as the practical conclusion of the pericope on worldliness and divine friendship (4:4–10). The reflexive 'humble yourselves' (tapeinōthēte, aorist passive imperative) places the act of humbling within the believer's agency while recognizing that the capacity for genuine humility is itself a gift of the grace given to the humble. The divine counter-action 'he will exalt you' uses the passive voice to indicate divine agency — exaltation is not self-achieved but divinely granted in response to the posture of receptivity. The verse closes a passage that moves from friendship with the world (verse 4) through submission, resistance to the devil, drawing near to God, and grief — with humility as the culminating posture that unlocks divine exaltation.
