Study Note

The command 'confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed' has been a foundational text for Catholic sacramental confession and for Protestant small-group accountability practices. The healing in view (iathēte) may refer to physical healing (the context of verses 14-15 is anointing for illness) or to spiritual restoration — or both, given the Hebrew tradition's reluctance to separate the two. The following affirmation — 'the prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working' — uses Elijah as the exemplar: a human 'of like nature with us' whose prayer both stopped and restored rain (verses 17-18). The verse's mutuality ('to one another') is important: confession and prayer are reciprocal practices within the community, not merely vertical acts.
