Study Note

The climax of the Nicodemus discourse turns on a judicial metaphor: 'This is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.' The Johannine theology of judgment places its center not at a future tribunal but at the moment of encounter with Christ: the response to the light is itself the verdict. The moral analysis is psychologically acute — people avoid the light not because they cannot see but because they prefer not to be seen (verse 20: 'everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed'). This realized eschatology of judgment complements the future judgment of John 5:28-29 without negating it, creating a both/and structure.
