Study Note

Malachi's oracle of the coming messenger who will 'prepare the way' before the LORD himself enters the temple is one of the most explicitly fulfilled Old Testament prophecies according to the synoptic Gospels. Matthew 11:10, Mark 1:2, and Luke 7:27 all identify John the Baptist as the fulfillment of this prophecy, making Malachi 3:1 the explicit background for understanding John's preparatory role. The verse combines two figures — a messenger and 'the Lord' (Adon) who follows — in a way that the New Testament distinguishes as John and Jesus respectively. The sudden arrival 'in his temple' connects to the prophetic tradition of divine theophany in the sanctuary (Ezekiel 43:4; Isaiah 6) and frames Jesus's temple actions within an expected divine visitation.
