Gadi

Divided Kingdom Israel · H1424
Old Testament

Gadi was the father of Menahem, who became king of Israel after assassinating Shallum.

Gadi was the father of Menahem, who assassinated King Shallum and seized the throne of Israel, reigning approximately 752–742 BC (2 Kings 15:14–22). His son Menahem was notorious for his brutality—he ripped open the pregnant women of Tiphsah—and for his policy of paying tribute to Tiglath-pileser III of Assyria to secure his grip on power. Gadi is remembered through his son as the progenitor of one of the most turbulent dynasties in the final decades of the northern kingdom.
