Haman

Exile Persian · H2001
Old Testament

Haman, a high-ranking Persian official, conspired to kill all the Jews in the empire but was ultimately thwarted by Queen Esther and Mordecai.

Haman the Agagite was the chief minister of Ahasuerus (Xerxes) king of Persia whose wounded pride over Mordecai's refusal to bow to him led to a calculated plan to exterminate all the Jews in the Persian Empire (Esther 3:1–13). He cast lots (purim) to determine the most propitious date for the massacre, giving the book of Esther its name for the Jewish festival of Purim. His downfall came swiftly through Esther's courageous intervention, and he was hanged on the very gallows he had prepared for Mordecai (Esther 7:10). Haman serves in the book of Esther as the archetypal enemy of God's people, whose schemes are overturned by providential reversal.
