husband of Zeruiah

The husband of Zeruiah, David's sister, is never named in the biblical text despite the fact that three of his sons — Joab, Abishai, and Asahel — were among David's most prominent military leaders (1 Samuel 26:6; 2 Samuel 2:18; 1 Chronicles 2:16). His sons are consistently identified by their mother's name rather than his, a practice that may indicate Zeruiah's higher social standing as a daughter of Jesse, or the father's early death, or simply a tradition that associated these warriors with the house of David through the maternal line.
