Jehizkiah

Old Testament

Jehizkiah, an Ephraimite leader, opposed taking Judean captives during the reign of King Ahaz of Judah.

Jehizkiah son of Shallum was an Ephraimite leader who stood with three other chiefs to oppose the idea of enslaving captives taken from Judah by the Israelite army during the reign of King Ahaz (2 Chronicles 28:12). The prophet Oded had rebuked the army for the plan, and Jehizkiah and his colleagues persuaded the warriors to release the captives and provide for them. This act of compassion and intercession on behalf of fellow Israelites, cutting across the division between northern and southern kingdoms, is one of the more striking episodes of the divided monarchy narrative.
