Kedar

Patriarchs (Abraham–Joseph) Arabia · H6938
Old Testament

Kedar was a son of Ishmael and the eponymous ancestor of a nomadic Arab tribe known for their tents and flocks.

Kedar was the second son of Ishmael and the ancestor of the Kedarite tribes of northwestern Arabia (Genesis 25:13; 1 Chronicles 1:29). In the prophetic literature, Kedar becomes a byword for the nomadic peoples of the desert, whose 'black tents' (Song of Songs 1:5) and flocks of rams and camels made them famous traders (Isaiah 60:7; Ezekiel 27:21). Isaiah foretells judgment on Kedar within a year (Isaiah 21:16–17), while Jeremiah portrays them as people who, unlike Israel, never exchange their gods (Jeremiah 2:10). The Nabataean kingdom that dominated the region in the Hellenistic period was likely descended in part from the Kedarites.
