Melzar, the steward appointed by the chief eunuch to oversee Daniel and his companions.

Melzar (also translated 'the steward' or 'the guardian') was the official appointed by the chief eunuch Ashpenaz to oversee Daniel and his three companions during their training in the Babylonian court (Daniel 1:11, 16). When Daniel proposed the test of eating only vegetables and water instead of the king's food, Melzar agreed and the four youths proved healthier than their peers. His name may be a title rather than a personal name, and his cooperation with Daniel's request makes him a minor positive figure in the opening chapter of Daniel.
