Nicolaus was a proselyte from Antioch chosen as one of the seven deacons in the early church.
Nicolaus was a proselyte from Antioch—a Gentile who had fully converted to Judaism before becoming a follower of Christ—chosen as one of the seven deacons to administer the relief distribution in the Jerusalem church (Acts 6:5). His designation as 'a proselyte from Antioch' makes him the only one of the seven explicitly identified as a Gentile convert. Some early church writers, beginning with Irenaeus, associated the 'Nicolaitans' condemned in Revelation 2 with his followers, but this connection is uncertain and was disputed in antiquity.
