Study Note

When John falls as dead before the vision of the glorified Christ, the risen Lord lays his hand on him and says, 'Fear not; I am the first and the last.' The divine title 'the first and the last' derives from Isaiah 44:6 and 48:12, where it is exclusively divine — its application to Christ is one of Revelation's most unambiguous identifications of Jesus with the God of Israel. The gesture of the right hand upon the fallen prophet and the reassuring 'fear not' echoes Daniel 10:10-12's angelophany, but here the figure is not an angel but one who identifies himself as 'the Living One' who 'was dead, and behold, I am alive for evermore' — a resurrection self-declaration. The verse became a touchstone for patristic arguments about Christ's deity from Irenaeus onward.
