Study Note
'For his judgments are true and just; for he has judged the great prostitute who corrupted the earth with her sexual immorality, and has avenged on her the blood of his servants' — the fourfold 'Hallelujah' of Revelation 19:1–8 celebrates the fall of Babylon as the vindication of divine justice and the answer to the martyrs' cry of 6:10. The affirmation 'his judgments are true and just' (alēthinai kai dikaiai) frames eschatological destruction as an act of truthful and righteous character rather than divine caprice, drawing on the doxologies of Deuteronomy 32:4 and Revelation 15:3. The Hallelujah formula, unique in the New Testament to this passage, is borrowed from the Hallel Psalms (113–118) of the Jewish Passover liturgy, connecting the new exodus liberation from Babylon to the original Passover deliverance from Egypt. The verse establishes that the eschatological community's joy is not at cruelty but at the restoration of moral order in God's universe.
