Study Note
The cry 'hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb' introduces one of Revelation's most jarring paradoxes: the Lamb — figure of sacrificial gentleness — is the agent of eschatological wrath. The 'wrath of the Lamb' (orgē tou arniou) subverts all expectations from the Passover and Isaiah 53 traditions, revealing that the same sacrificial obedience that absorbed sin in the cross becomes the standard against which all sin is measured in the final judgment. The phrase 'the great day of his wrath is come' (v. 17) identifies this as the fulfilment of Old Testament 'day of the Lord' texts (Joel 2:11; Zephaniah 1:14-15), re-read through the prism of Christology. Psalms 2:12 ('lest he be angry…blessed are all they that put their trust in him') provides the contrast: the same one who is rightly feared is also the refuge for those who trust him.
