Study Note

Paul's argument that Abraham 'received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised' turns Genesis 17 against the circumcision party: the sign came after the faith, ratifying what already existed rather than conferring what was absent. The sequence — faith (Genesis 15:6), then circumcision (Genesis 17) — is chronologically separated by roughly fourteen years according to Jewish reckoning, giving Paul's argument concrete historical force. Abraham thus becomes 'the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised' (v. 11b) — the paradigm of uncircumcised Gentile faith — long before the Sinai covenant defined Jewish identity. The passage grounds the sacramental theology of sign-and-reality: outward signs are seals confirming inward faith, not independent causes of salvation.
