'For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life' — the 'how much more' (pollō mallon) argument from the greater to the lesser draws an inference from the more difficult act of reconciling enemies to the lesser act of sustaining the reconciled. The term 'enemies' (echthroi) in verse 10 names the pre-conversion state more starkly than 'ungodly' (verse 6) or 'sinners' (verse 8), emphasizing that reconciliation is God's act toward those actively opposed to him, not merely indifferent. The second half — 'saved by his life' — refers to the resurrection and the ongoing intercession of the risen Christ (Romans 8:34), indicating that salvation has both a past (death) and a continuing (resurrection) dimension. Together with 2 Corinthians 5:18–21, this verse forms the New Testament's most concentrated theology of reconciliation.
