'If God be for us, who can be against us?' — this rhetorical question opens the great doxological climax of Romans 8 and grounds absolute security not in circumstances but in the divine disposition. The argument moves from the gift of the Son (verse 32) to the work of Christ and the Spirit (verses 33-34) to the unbreakable nature of God's love (verses 35-39), making the question of verse 31 the hinge on which the whole assurance of believers turns. Psalm 118:6 ('The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?') is the Old Testament counterpart, and together they frame the psalm-to-epistle theology of confidence in divine faithfulness.
