Study Note

God reveals the interior tension of his covenant judgment: he considered scattering Israel so thoroughly that 'the remembrance of them should cease from among men.' But the divine soliloquy continues (32:27) — he held back for fear that Israel's enemies would misattribute the defeat to their own power, not to divine judgment. This remarkable passage portrays God reasoning from the implications of divine honor in a way that also shows his mercy: total annihilation is restrained by concern for the integrity of the divine name among the nations. Ezekiel 20:9, 14, 22 develops the same 'for my name's sake' logic as the restraint on full judgment.
