Study Note

'And I will set thy bounds from the Red sea even unto the sea of the Philistines, and from the desert unto the river' — the territorial promise defines the maximum extent of the Promised Land from the Gulf of Aqaba (Red Sea/Yam Suph) to the Mediterranean (sea of the Philistines) and from the Sinai desert to the Euphrates. This is the broadest version of the land promise, paralleled in Genesis 15:18 and Deuteronomy 1:7, and partially fulfilled in the Solomonic empire (1 Kings 4:21) but never fully during the monarchic period. Jewish and Christian eschatological traditions have read the unfulfilled scope of the promise as pointing toward a future fulfillment, while others understand it typologically as the church's universal inheritance in Christ.
