The retrospective on the Exodus declares that 'in all their distress he too was distressed, and the angel of his presence saved them; in his love and mercy he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.' The phrase 'in all their distress he too was distressed' (if the Hebrew tsarar is read with the negative particle lo' omitted, as in many manuscripts) attributes divine pathos to YHWH — God sharing in Israel's suffering rather than watching from a distance. The 'angel of his presence' (malak panav) may refer to the divine presence itself personified, or to a specific mediating figure, and has been interpreted Christologically in patristic exegesis. The verse underpins theodicy: the God who allowed exile is the same God who suffered with the exiles, a pattern that finds its apex in the incarnation.
