Study Note

'Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.' The astronomical metaphor — 'Father of lights, with no variableness or shadow of turning' — contrasts God with the heavenly bodies he created, which rotate, wax, and wane. The verse establishes divine immutability as the theological warrant for trusting God's goodness: because he never varies, every blessing can be traced to him without fear that he will cease to be generous. Numbers 23:19 ('God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent') and Malachi 3:6 ('I am the Lord, I change not') ground the same immutability in the broader canon.
