Abiah

Exodus & Wilderness Tribe of Judah · H0029J
Old Testament

Abiah was the wife of Hezron who bore Ashhur after her husband's death.

Abiah was the second wife of Hezron, a descendant of Judah through Perez, and she bore him Ashhur, described as the 'father' (i.e., founder) of Tekoa, after Hezron had died (1 Chronicles 2:24). The circumstances of her marriage and the posthumous birth suggest a levirate-like arrangement or an inheritance union to maintain family property. She is known solely through this genealogical notice, yet her son Ashhur became an important figure in the tribal territory of Judah, founding or rebuilding the town of Tekoa.
