Old Testament

Abiathar, son of Ahimelech, was a high priest who served during the reigns of David and Solomon.

Abiathar, son of Ahimelech and sole survivor of Saul's massacre of the priests at Nob, became high priest and a faithful companion of David throughout his years as a fugitive and as king (1 Samuel 22:20–23; 2 Samuel 15:24–29). He carried the ephod and provided oracular guidance in several critical moments of David's reign. During Absalom's rebellion he remained loyal to David, helping to convey intelligence from Jerusalem. However, his support of Adonijah's bid for the throne over Solomon led to his deposition and exile to Anathoth—fulfilling the prophecy against the house of Eli (1 Kings 2:26–27; 1 Samuel 2:30–36).
