Old Testament

Abishai, the son of Zeruiah and nephew of David, was a loyal commander and one of David's mighty men, known for his bravery and military prowess.

Abishai son of Zeruiah was the elder brother of Joab and one of David's most formidable warriors, heading the second tier of the 'three mighty men' with a record of slaying three hundred men with his spear (2 Samuel 23:18–19). He accompanied David into Saul's camp by night and restrained himself from killing the sleeping king (1 Samuel 26:6–9). He saved David's life in battle against the Philistine giant Ishbi-benob (2 Samuel 21:17) and executed Shimei's enemy Shimei at David's command during the Absalom crisis. Fierce and loyal, Abishai sometimes acted with a ruthlessness that David both valued and found necessary to restrain.
